MALE or FEMALE
Okay so this is the common question among first time rattie owners. BUT the real answer is what you really prefer in your future pet. Everyone in that has had rats for years has their preference of one sex over the other. I personally prefer bucks over does. I find the bucks to generally calmer and more loving. NOT that does aren't loving, but they are more (IMO) into exploring than sitting on my lap and eating pizza with me. Don't get me wrong I've had lots of awesome sweet does. But I just prefer the LAZY bucks.
A lot of first time owners go for the does, I don't know why really maybe it's the lack of the males...umm BALLS lol. Some people are just skeeved out by the though of them laying on ones shoulder as they brux in your ear. It's never bothered me. Or I have just never thought that much about it.
Both sexes are equally as engaging as the other. It just depends on whether you want activity or laziness. I have found does to be messier than bucks, where some people find it the opposite.
Both sexes, smell the same (unlike mice, where males REEK) and I clean their cages, once a week.
Bucks you can always have them neutered if those two nutty friends give you the hebbi gebbie's.
When first time owners apply, and they are unsure of which sex to get and ask my opinion, I'll say boys. Especially if the rats are going to be around children. Because they are bigger and again lazier. Kids like to sit and pet their rats so what's better than a big ol fat (we hope not fat) rat sitting in your lap.
If you are looking for something with a bit more spunk, go for does. They love to look and run around. They also do very well in training. Boys do too, but does like more action. They love to run around their cages and explore new things. They also can be chewers. Those nice new hammocks you got, they will make a few more adjustments to the hem line and a few more exit and entrance holes. But they can be VERY funny and entertaining. Does like to have wheels to run on. Bucks are like "oh something to take a nap on"
So the most important thing, when choosing a sex is what are you wanting to do with the rats you get? Sit and eat pizza on the sofa and watch a movie with a buck, or have a fun play time and watch the antics with the does?
Over all I like bucks, BUT I do really enjoy my does as well. AND having just bucks, isn't conducive in a breeding program. So if this doesn't help you out, feel free and email me and if you would like we can arrange a time for you to meet both sexes and you can decide from there.
