BARN HUNTING
Barn Hunting is relatively new a K-9 sport where dogs go to a trial (any breed is welcome) and they sniff out rats in tubes. The dogs get to climb and go through tunnels to search and sniff out the rat. Dogs of all breeds really enjoy this sport. They get both a physical and mental workout. Terriers get to do what they were bred to do!! The rats are NOT harmed, in fact great measure are taken to ensure 100% safety for the rats. This page is here to PROPERLY, inform the rat community about rats used in the trials and the sport itself. Don't go jumping off the handle before you know EVERYTHING about this sport. Don't listen to PETA and other ARA, about this sport because they know NOTHING and don't care to learn the TRUTH behind it and how WONDERFULLY the rats are cared for.

How do to get your dogs to live with rats in the house without them going bonkers.
Even thought my dogs have been raised with the rats, I always make a point to let them know (still) that they are members of our family and off limits. If you are concerned about your dogs using them as chew toys, it's best to know your dogs basic obedience skills and how solid they are.
If you are introducing dogs to new pet rats and they get excited, asking them to sit and stay and focus on you is important when they are in front of the cage. You want to desensitize them to the rats. This will NOT make them loose their drive in the barn hunt, but they won't go bonkers with the rats in the house.
Slow intros, with sit and stays and lots of treats. Maybe feeding the dog(s) in front of the rat cage and once the dog is calm in both mind and body, then feed the dog. This (IMO) will let the dog know that the rats are family members. Some choose to keep the rats in a room where the dogs aren't allow and that is an option as well.
