Frequently Asked Questions
* How much are your rats?
Please see the "Fees for Each Gene" page
* What do you recommend for bedding?
Please see the "Diets and Housing" page
* Where are you located?
I am in the Eastern Panhandle of W.V.
* What do feed or recommend feeding my rats?
Please see the "Diets and Housing" page
* What babies do you have available?
If we have rats available, please see the "Available Rats" page, and they will be on
our Facebook page.
* Have you tested for the Seoul/Hantaan Virus?
Yes, we have. The results are posted on my "Serology Testing" page.
* Do you know of any rat friendly vets?
I have a page for "Rat Friendly Vets" there are 11 different vets listed.
* What are the chances of me getting something from your litter?
It all depends on how many others are on the waiting list. It's first come
first served. Those that have an approved application are the ones on the waiting list.
* Do you work with other breeders?
Yes, but it's a case by case basis.
* Do you mentor new breeders?
Yes, but again on a case by case basis.
* Why do you ask so much for your rats?
Well because I do more (way more) than a pet store or a feeder breeder does. It costs money
to import new genes, bedding, the diet I make, the serology testing I do.
* How often do you handle your rats?
I handle them daily. They have out time as well.
* Why do you have the application and contracts?
This is for the protection of the rats. I want to make sure they DO NOT end
up in a shelter or rescue. If someone is approved and gets rats from me, they are
under contract to return the rats to me (no iffs ands or buts about it) If contract is
broken, I will not hesitate to involve a lawyer.
* Do you rescue rats?
I have in the past and it's a case by case basis. It also depends on if I feel I have the
room in quarantine.
* How do I get rats from you?
First the application needs to be filled out and approved. Please follow the instructions
and read the "Application Process" page thoroughly. It goes over the entire process. If
you have any further questions let me know.
* Should I give my rat a bath?
In my opinion no, they do not need baths. Unless they get something sticky on them or
get very dirty for some reason. They are very clean animals and bathe as much as a cat
if not more.
* Are rats good with other pets like cats and dogs?
Seeing I have cats and dogs in my home, they are used to them and shouldn't have
an issue with them, unless the dogs or cat makes the rat feel threatened.
* Does my rat need to see a vet?
Yes, it would be a good idea at least once a year for a yearly check up, and
OF COURSE, if the rat needs medical attention. Do not go on the net to find out, if
they are sick, they NEED to be vetted.
* What size cage do I need to get for my new rats?
Ideally, something about 2 square feet, per rat is the "standard" for a good cage
size. Bigger can be better, but when they are babies, it maybe a bit overwhelming
so getting a cage they can feel comfortable in is important.
* How many rats should I get?
If you are new to rats and still learning, getting at least two is what you should get.
A single rat is not a happy rat. They are very social creatures and crave the company
of their own kind.
* Where can I get a cage?
I have links to cages on my "Diets and Housing" page. I LOVE Martins Cages.
* Where can I get a travel carrier?
You can get them at Pet-smart, or even on Amazon or E-bay.
* Can rats live with Mice?
No! The rats will kill and eat the mice. Not something I would risk.
* Do you ship rats?
No. I don't trust the airlines. If I were, the entire cost is up to the buyer and it's at the
the buyers own risk. It's just too scary and too much of a risk.
